Veldt Presentations and Irony

Hi all,

Today in class we started with your Veldt presentations.  Following presentations, we took some notes on the types of irony.  We then discussed the "Barney" questions from Friday, and what kind of irony is present in the short story.

We ended class today with a review sheet of all of the stories and terms that you will need to be familiar with for Thursday's unit test.  Tomorrow, we will read the short story on the test, and begin preparing your paragraph outlines.

Barney

Hi All,

Today in English you took your second vocabulary quiz.

We then took notes on point of view in the short stories section of our notebook.  We read the short story "Barney" and discussed the point of view of the story.  We then had group discussions using some questions as prompts.  Any remaining time was used to work on your broadcast assignments.

News Broadcast Assignment

Hi All,

Today in class we discussed the significance of the names Peter and Wendy in "The Veldt."  We learned the term allusion and added the definition to the short stories section of our binder.

Allusion is a literary device in which the writer or speaker refers either directly or indirectly to a person, event, or thing in history or to a work of art or literature.

We then used the remainder of class to finish our news broadcast assignments for Monday.

Reminder:  There will be no class time to work on projects tomorrow (Friday).

Homework:

1.  Study Vocabulary.  Vocab quiz tomorrow.

2.  News broadcast assignments due Monday.

The Veldt Creative Project

Hi All,

Today in class I did a homework check for vocab completion and "The Veldt" questions.  We then discussed "The Veldt" questions as a class.

The remainder of class was spent working on the creative assignment for "The Veldt" that I handed out today.  You will be given an additional thirty minutes to work on your projects in class tomorrow.  No class time will be given on Friday, and presentations are due on Monday.

Plot Devices

Hi all,

Today in class you handed in your found poem assignments.  I handed out your second set of vocab words, which will be quizzed on Friday.

We spent some of class time today going over notes on your paragraph assignment from last week before heading into our third quick write of the semester.

We finished class today by going over some notes on plot devices, and quietly reading the short story, "The Veldt," which we will begin discussing tomorrow.

Paragraph Draft Day

Hi all,

Today in class we spent time learning about incorporating strong transition words into our paragraphs.  We then talked about style and grammar expectations for writing, and spent the remainder of class writing and editing our drafts.

Paragraph Writing

Hi All,

Today in class we finished learning about literary/persuasive paragraph writing.  You were given a topic and asked to start your paragraph outline.

Homework:

Complete your paragraph outline for MONDAY.  If you want to start a draft, you can bring that as well.

Paragraph topic: Discuss John Purcell's personality traits that make him a poor father in the short story “The Father,” by Hugh Garner.

**Don't forget that your topic sentence must offer an opinion.

Monday will be spent turning outlines and drafts into full paragraphs and adding strong transitions.

"The Father" Literary Paragraph Prep

Hi All,

Today in class we discussed the short story, "The Father" that you read yesterday.  We then discussed John Purcell's personality traits on your web diagrams, and spent time going through the story to find quotes (evidence) that those personality traits exist.

We ended the class by taking notes on how to write a literary paragraph.

The Father

Hi All,

"The Friday Everything Changed" questions were due at the beginning of class today.

We then took notes on the types of characters found in stories.

After that, everyone read the short story, "The Father" found in your textbooks.

We discussed the types of characters in the story, and looked at John Purcell in particular.  On the board, we made a web diagram looking at John's different personality traits.

Homework:  Make your own web diagram of John's personality traits.  Leave space in between each trait, as you will be adding more information in class tomorrow.  Due tomorrow (Wednesday).

The Friday Everything Changed

Hi All,

Today in English we had a mini lesson on sentence fragments.  If you were away, you will need to copy a few notes from your study buddy into the grammar section of your binder when you return.

We then completed a quick sentence fragment practice sheet.

I read the short story, "The Friday Everything Changed" by Anne Hart aloud to the class.  The story is in your textbook.

We then discussed the plot line of the story and answered questions.
